Who are we? I have dedicated this volume to people who
ask that question. Most people in the developed world
live a good life and take everything for granted; just
take a moment to think of the people who came before
you and of all the sacrifices that were made to ensure
successive generations would have a life of ease. I took an
interest in family history at a very early age and was able
to reach back five generations with the only resource
being a single graveyard. I decided to go back further
and was blessed to obtain records from a distant cousin
these records allowed me to trace my paternal line to 1530
Switzerland, I was then faced was a dead end. The early
volumes of this series consisted of fictional characters
with an origin in the former Duchy of Alsace now a
region of modern-day France. From this original
homeland, my ancestors immigrated to the British Crown
Colony of South Carolina. I am not sure if they knew the
reason they were allowed to immigrate to what is now
the United States of America. These ancestors fled from
the poverty and religious intolerance of 16th century
Europe; and their only goal was to escape. The actual
reason they was so welcome with open arms: they were to
be sent to the backcountry of south Carolina to act as a
buffer between the city of Charles Town (now Charleston)
and the hostile Native American tribes that lived near the
river systems. My ancestors were sent to and obtained
land in a settlement then called Saxe Gotha in the area of
what is now Columbia the Capitol of the present State of
South Carolina. I compared a map of 16th century South
Carolina with a modern map, in the present day above the
land of my ancestors runs two interstate highway
systems.
